How do I get an email account?

Current University of Utah students, staff, and faculty have email accounts in the "utah.edu" domain.  Your default 'utah.edu' email address is your 'unid@utah.edu'.  To access your account, go to any open access computer lab on the University of Utah campus (most have consultants that can help you) or any computer that has access to the Internet. Open the following URL: http://unid.utah.edu.

Login using your uNID and password. Once you are logged in, you can click on "Manage Addresses" under the Email section.  This will show you your current email address.  You can personalize your email address to something like 'firstname.lastname@utah.edu" if you choose.  You'll also see information on checking your email, and forwarding it to another email address.

REMEMBER to click on Quit or your account information may be accessible to other parties.

NOTE: You are responsible for all activity on your account. Please remember to logout of your account when finished with each session. NEVER tell anyone else your password.

Which email address should i use?

Electronic mail (email) is one of the formal means of communication at the University of Utah. As such, it's important that you have an email address and that you register it with the University. There are several email options available to you.

Campus Email Accounts

Campus email accounts (called UMail) give you an email address in the form: 'uNID@utah.edu'. These addresses are served from a central email server maintained by the Office of Information Technology. You must create a more personalized alias, such as firstname.lastname@utah.edu, in the Manage Email Aliases area of the uNID Account Tools. Your alias must contain your last name as it is recorded in the Campus Information System (PeopleSoft) records.

Email can be forwarded to this account from any email account. Staff and faculty can can also forward email from this account to any email account. You can check your campus email on the web.  Students are required and staff are encouraged to use their 'utah.edu' email accounts to receive official campus information - do this by putting your 'utah.edu' email address in the Campus Information System's email field.

Department Email Accounts

Department accounts typically have the form 'name@department.utah.edu'. Most department accounts are available only to their faculty and staff. Not all departments offer accounts.

Any Internet Service Provider

Most ISPs include email as one of the services they offer in connection with their dialup accounts.  If you have Internet access, there are several websites that offer free email.

For University students, faculty and staff, we suggest using a University email account as the official university email address in the Campus Information System's email field. Students, staff and faculty may register or update their email address information in the Campus Information System.

Why should I use my campus ‘utah.edu’ email address?

The University of Utah is moving toward using email for official campus communication more and more.  We suggest that all campus personnel use their "utah.edu" email address as their contact address in their Campus Information Systems (PeopleSoft) records.  This email address can be forwarded to any other email address you prefer, so that you don't have to check several email accounts.

How do I forward my UMail email to another email address?

Currently, only the Campus Help Desk and delegated administrators in campus departments have the ability to set email forwarding for campus email (UMail) addresses. Please contact your department email administrator or the Campus Help Desk at 1-4000 option 1.

uNIDs remain active at least one semester after leaving the University. Leaving the University may mean graduation, termination of employment at the University, or simply not being registered for classes in a given semester. This keeps uNIDs active through Summer Term and ready for use again the following Fall Semester provided you register for classes Fall Semester.

When you leave the University, you can forward your email to a new email address. Just contact your department email administrator or the Campus Help Desk at 1-4000 option 1.

How do i remove forwarding?

To remove email forwarding, log on to the uNID Account Tools at http://unid.utah.edu and click on Mail Forwarding. Click the Stop Fowarding button. This will stop the email forwarding and only deliver the email locally.

Why do I keep getting the email message "don't delete this message - folder internal data"?

Pine puts that message at the beginning of your mail file. Every time you check your email with a pop client, like Netscape, that message gets deleted. The next time you run Pine, it gets recreated. Pine uses it to store information about the rest of your email messages. There is no harm done when you download all of your email and get that message.

One way to avoid getting a copy of this message every time you switch mail programs is to use IMAP instead of POP. Most new email programs allow you to use either. IMAP allows you to view your mail without downloading it to your machine first (like pine), and the IMAP server ignores that message. Check your preferences for an IMAP option.

How do I close my email account?

First, you should understand that the "account" is part of your electronic identity at the U known as your Network ID (NID or uNID). Removing the account will also disable your uNID and subsequently your access to other electronic resoures such as the campus modem pool or the Library databases.

To close your account, either send an email from the account you want closed to helpdesk@utah.edu OR submit a Trouble Ticket to the Campus Help Desk by calling 581-4000 option 1. Please include in the request:

  • Your name
  • Your University ID number
  • Your University Network ID (uNID)
  • A phone number where you can be contacted
  • A forwarding address for your email, if desired

How can I view email headers?

An email header is a section of an email message that is used by a mail server to route and deliver an email message. Normally, most email clients show an abbreviated header displaying just the sender (From), recipient (To), and subject. When tracking down problems with a particular email message, it is useful to see the complete header. The complete header shows additional information such as the host names of the machines the email was routed through and the message number the email was logged as on each machine. Here are instructions to display full headers for various email programs and services.
