ITAC Meeting January 19, 2006 2:00 pm Dumke Conference Room, EBC Agenda: 1. Updates on wireless, email, etc. 2. Implement auto-blocking for machines scanning for port 0 and 2048 – Action item We have looked into this and these scans are 99.9% of the time a precursor to a scan for specific services on machines that respond. They are always an indication of someone mapping the network. The same algorithms that are being used on the port 22 and 5900 would apply. 3. Permanently blocking repeat offenders – Action item We currently allow hosts back into our network after 30 days of being shunned. We have seen 3 hosts previously blocked start scanning again after being allowed back in. We propose to permanently block repeat offenders, with the caveat that we will allow them back if the admin of the IP in question contacts us. 4. Implement auto-blocking for machines scanning unallocated address space – Action item 5. HB0082: Unique student identifier – Discussion item The bill will be discussed soon in the Utah Legislature and has identity management implications for the University of Utah. The bill's text was sent to the list on Jan 17th. 6. Optical Networking and campus network strategy - Discussion item Should we begin to strategize about optical networking for campus?
