Wireless Hardware Recommendations
The Office of Information Technology, with the approval of ITC and ITAC, is helping to provide a common supported wireless backbone infrastructure to create a ubiquitous wireless environment. THe current wireless hardware that works fot this infrasture and environement is Trapeze thin access points.
If your department chooses not to purchase Trapeze equipment (this is not recommended), there are two reports that rank wireless equipment tested by the campus “Friday wireless group” and approved by ITAC now available. The Wireless Hardware Report is an overview; the AP-Details spreadsheet includes more detailed technical notes. Both will be updated as more testing is completed.
The wireless equipment in the reports has been found to be compliant with the requirements of the current generation of the Wireless White Paper. In addition, some assumptions about the future direction of wireless on campus were taken in to consideration and are listed on page 2 of the Wireless Hardware Report. As with most networking equipment, one size will not fit all. However, based on the current planned and deployed base, that this equipment will fit the needs of the majority of campus.
