It’s Time to Update Your Qwest Dex White Page Listings!

It's that time again. If you have additions, corrections or deletions for the Qwest Dex 2006-2007 Salt Lake City White Pages, the deadline to submit them is April 21, 2006. Delivery will be in the fall of 2006. The University of Utah listings begin on page 233 in the business section of the 2005-2006 White Pages.

The listings under the University of Utah heading are paid for by Office of Information Technology-NetCom (listings under the University Health Care heading on page 230 are paid for by Hospital Telecommunications). Other listings your department may have in the White Pages business section will be billed to your department. All changes should be made online at www.it.utah.edu/services/phones/qwestdex.html . If you have no changes, there is no need to submit the form.

Departments with extension offices or locations outside of Salt Lake City may want to take the time to review their White Pages listings in other local directories. If you anticipate changes or additions to these directories, please call Robin or Allyson (phone numbers below) so we can provide Qwest with that information. The online form is not for any directory changes other than the Salt Lake City White Pages.

The Dex Media representative will be contacting departments directly about your Yellow Pages listing(s). If you wish to advertise in the Yellow Pages, contact Beckie Penman at 284-5055 or send an email to beckie.penman@dexmedia.com. Please note, if your department has a listing in the Qwest DEX Yellow Pages, you will be billed directly from Dex Media. Your department will make the payment directly to Dex Media, also.

Please call Robin Horton in OIT-NetCom at 585-7205 with any questions for listings under the University of Utah heading and related Alphabetical White Pages listings. For listings under University Health Care, Moran Eye Center, UNI, University Health Care Community Clinics and doctor and clinic alphabetical listings, please call Allyson Tanner in Hospital Telecommunications at 581-3879.

UMail – C'mon over to the New Campus Email System

Since 2003, the University has been assessing campus email needs. An RFP process was followed, and user trials were held in early 2005. One product stood out for ease-of-use and functionality: Microsoft Exchange. A centralized Exchange-backed email system called UMail is now in production, with several departments using it. The system will do the following:

  • Replace existing campus and Health Science Center GroupWise and iPlanet email systems with an integrated campus-wide deployment of Microsoft Exchange, including associated gateway services (virus scanning and spam tagging) and client applications.
  • Deliver a unified system for all users that allows seamless operation of system functions, such as calendaring, instant messaging and email.
  • Provide all University students, staff and faculty with a UMail account.

What are the Advantages to UMail?

  • Bigger mailbox and attachment sizes – Faculty and staff receive 500 MB (more can be requested for academic purposes), students receive 50 MB, and attachment size has been increased to 50 MB
  • Increased productivity – Calendar, task management and personal address book integration. When scheduling appointments with other UMail users, you can free/busy search to determine best meeting times.
  • Better Access - Convenient access to email on and off campus, no VPN required
    • Client software is provided for Windows and Mac OS (Outlook 2003 and Entourage)
    • Outlook Web Access can be used for access without loading a client
    • Outlook Mobile Access can be used with PDA and Cell Phone Browsers
    • Outlook ActiveSync can sync with Windows CE/Mobile PDA/Cell Phone devices (data plan required)
    • Palm and Blackberry devices can sync with Outlook (using the vendor-provided software)
  • Simplified Login - No need to learn another UserID. UMail uses your University uNID and CIS password.
  • Adminstrative Assistant Access - Grant other UMail users access to your calendar and address books
  • Task Management - You can assign tasks to other UMail users, and track task status.
  • Shared Resource Scheduling - Your department can setup shared calendars and address books, useful for conference rooms and department contact lists.
  • Message Tracking - Verify that your messages are being received. You can track the status of email messages sent to other UMail users (i.e., delivered, read, deleted).
  • Address Book - UMail users will be in a central Global Address List (some exceptions)
  • Virus Protection
  • Spam (Unsolicited Commercial Email/UCE) Tagging - Emails will be identified as UCE so that clients can easily run filtering rules for their mailbox.
  • High Availability – UMail system has been designed so that users will experience little or no downtime
  • More Support - End user support is 24x7 through the Campus Help Desk and the ITS Help Desk (August).
  • Training - User and technical online and instructor-lead training are available.
