Campus Area Network Service Policy
University of Utah CAMPUS AREA NETWORK SERVICE POLICY
February 16, 2001
Purpose
To define products and services included in the standard rate charged by the Network and Communication Services Department at the University of Utah for a campus-area network (CAN) connection.
Scope
This policy applies to all NetCom customers for CAN services: any department or organization which has a connection to the campus network core.
Background
NetCom is a campus department that must recover the costs of providing service. When the CAN rate was developed, it was based on specific expenses for equipment, services, and overhead. This policy details what has been included in this basic rate calculation. Any requirement that exceeds the basic service level will be charged to the requesting department on an incremental cost basis. This policy defines what is included in the CAN services to establish a baseline for additional charges.
Policy
When a department connects to the University of Utah CAN, it will receive the following:
- One valid InterNic IP address per network interface card in a device.
- DNS service for the University domain. Upon request, NetCom will provide a name to IP address resolution through our primary and secondary DNS servers.
- Routing of data traffic throughout the University CAN.
- Routing of data traffic to the campus Network Access Point for full Internet access.
- 24 x 7 network availability. (At times, normal maintenance activities will require portions of the network to be down. These outages will be coordinated through the NetCom NOCC.)
- 24 x 7 network monitoring and assistance to campus IT managers for problem resolution in physical, network, data link and transport network layers. (Troubleshooting assistance may be billable if the problem is a departmental responsibility. When network problems occur, departments must place a trouble call to the NOCC via the Campus Help Desk at 581-4000.)
- A 100-megabit Ethernet connection to the CAN. The typical NetCom demarcation point for service is the switch into which 100-megabit connection terminates.
- Access to utilization statistics for their own demarc point is provided to IT Managers with current Point of Contact registration.
- The University of Utah CAN is an open network. It is suggested that each department is to make special arrangements with the Institutional Security Office (ISO) to provide for network security.
