Email for Formal Campus Communication
In an effort to increase the efficient distribution of critical information to all faculty, staff and students, the U's administration and deans have approved a recommendation to utilize e-mail for formal University communication.
E-mail for formal communications will facilitate the delivery of messages and documents to campus and extended communities or to distinct user groups and individuals. Formal University communications are official notices from the University to faculty, staff and students. These communications may include administrative content, such as human resources information, policy messages, general University news, budget updates, official announcements, etc. For more information on how to send formal email notices, please see the Directed Email (D-mail) page.
To receive these notices, it is essential that your e-mail address be kept current in the University’s campus web directory. Staff and faculty may update their e-mail address by logging on to the Campus Information System at http://www.cis.utah.edu with their uNID and password, and selecting the “update e-mail address” option in the “Records” section. If you have never logged into the CIS, your default password is the your birthdate in “ddmmyy” format. The system will then ask you to change to a user-specified secure password. It is ultimately each individual’s responsibility to keep their e-mail address current.
Individuals who do not have an e-mail address can activate their official University of Utah UMail account through the uNID Account Tools website (https://unid.utah.edu/) or by calling the Campus Help Desk (581-4000). E-mail addresses can also be obtained through departmental affiliation.
Department heads will be encouraged to make e-mail access readily available. However, there are other University-provided resources that can easily be used to access an e-mail account:
- Departmental machines
- Open labs and libraries
- free campus modem pool
- Web access (UMail Outlook Web Access)
