University Student Apartments -
High Speed Network Access
Internet Service
High speed data services (over long range Ethernet) are provided for University Student Apartments residents. The monthly amount in residents' rental fee includes:
- An "always-on" high speed connection to the campus network and the Internet.
- A high speed connection configured to support a minimum of 1 Mega byte per second.
- Network authentication with your uNID and password which scans connected computers for viruses, worms, and other troublesome malware.
- One OIT-provided modem for each apartment.
- Technical support available through OIT: Monday - Friday 7:00 AM - 10:00 PM, Saturday 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Emergency on-call technical support available 24/7.
To use your High Speed Service
- Plug in the new LRE modem, following the instructions you received from the main office or read the Instructions (PDF).
- Configure DHCP service on your PC.
- Try connecting to the Internet. Your Web browser should automatically redirect to a University of Utah login page.
- Contact the Campus Help Desk if service is not working or you have questions at
1-4000 option 1.
Network Authentication (Logging on)
Clean Access network authentication, implemented in summer 2007, requires a user to log onto the campus network using their University Network I.D. (uNID) and Campus Information System (CIS) password while accessing the Internet at USA apartments. After opening a Web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc...), residents will be automatically directed to a login website.
For each spouse and/or dependent who does not have an active uNID, and wants access to the University Network/Internet, a University of Utah Affiliate/POI form must be filled out. The completed POI form must be returned to the Main Office at University Student Apartments. Each spouse and/or dependent who submits a POI form will be issued a uNID. The Department of Human Resources will notify the Primary Tenant by email within 3-5 business days* of their spouse and/or dependents uNID. Additional POI forms are available at the Main Office or online at http://www.it.utah.edu/services/connected/USA/u-affiliate-poi-form.pdf
After you receive your uNID, you must log onto the Campus Information System (CIS) at http://www.cis.utah.edu to create a secure CIS password before you will be able to log onto the Internet in your USA residence. You will need your uNID and birthdate in order to sign onto the CIS the first time. Follow the instructions to create a secure CIS password.
By having your own uNID, each spouse and/or dependent will be able to access the Internet without the eligible University of Utah student, faculty or staff sharing their uNID and password. If you have questions about receiving your uNID after you have submitted your POI form, you may contact Human Resources at 581- 3527. If you have questions about your network access or your password, please contact the Campus Help Desk at 581-4000, option 1.
Modems and Network Usage
- Modems are the property of OIT and must be returned to the main office when residents vacate as part of the apartment inventory.
- If a resident takes the modem when they vacate USA, they will be charged $80.00. If modem is damaged due to misuse, the resident will be charged an $80.00 replacement fee.
- Residents will be required to abide by the Network Connection Acceptable Use Policy. This is the same policy that all University of Utah students are required to abide by.
- Each spouse and/or dependent who does not have an active uNID must fill out and submit a University of Utah Affiliate/POI form. Read the Network Authentication (Logging On) section.
