Housing and Residential Education Voice/Video/Data Services

The Office of Information Technology provides centralized cable tv and network/Internet services to Housing and Residential Education (HRE) residents. Some phone services are also available. These services encompass Gateway Heights, Chapel Glen, Sage Point, Shoreline Ridge, Benchmark Plaza, and Officers Circle.

uconnect Wireless Network Access

New this year, HRE residents will have access to the campus uconnect.utah.edu wireless network. The uconnect campus wireless network is an encrypted network. Users must enter their uNID and password during configuration to use this network. Users on uconnect get unlimited bandwidth, access to U resources (via a U of U IP address) and encryption for security. Note: Personal wireless networks (access points) will not be allowed in HRE rooms and apartments due to possible interference.

High Speed Campus Network Access (WANA)

Web-Authenticated Network Access (WANA) allows very high speed network access via a wired connection. WANA provides campus network and Internet access via general access network ports in classrooms, lounge areas, computer labs, and student apartments that can be used by anyone with a laptop computer (other than in dorm rooms) and a University Network ID (uNID) and password pair.

WANA ports in student dorms and apartments are one of the Residence Hall benefits. WANA updates and information for users are posted regularly on the WANA login page. To use WANA, you must have activated your University Network ID (uNID). Learn more about connecting and configuring your computer for WANA.

Additional Information

There is one phone number and at least two WANA ports which connect to the high speed campus network per residence.
HRE residents can call the Campus Help Desk at 1-4000 option 1 if they have game consoles or video recording devices like Tivo they want to use in their dorm. The Campus Help Desk needs the device's MAC address so it can be allowed through our network filters. To determine your device's MAC address, contact the vendor.
Use of campus networks is governed by campus information and network acceptable use policies.

Telephone Services

Landline Telephones

HRE room phone service has been discontinued (Shoreline Ridge apartment phone service will continue). The portion of the housing charge that previously paid for room phone service will now pay for wireless networking. Phone sets are available for residents' use in common areas of every building.

Cellular Telephones

As a University student, you are eligible for discounted University rates with cellular providers. You can login (using your uNID) to review plan options and costs at www.it.utah.edu/services/phones/cellular.php

Utalk Prepaid Long Distance Service

OIT has partnered with MobileSphere to provide Utalk pre-paid domestic and international long distance calling from any residence, office, cell phone, and off-campus phone throughout the continental United States. This service is available for everyone. You do not need to live in an on-campus residence to participate in the savings.

UTV Cable Television

OIT-provided UTV cable TV service is delivered to all student living quarters in Heritage Commons as part of your Residence Hall benefits. The 80 channel line-up includes 4 HBO channels, the Fox Sports channel, two MTV channels, and much more. Residents are responsible to provide their own television.
