Mailing Lists

If you regularly email a group of people, no matter how big or small, an email list may be helpful to you. There are currently over 1700 lists hosted on the campus list server. Besides doing standard email list distribution, the campus list server has a powerful web interface and more advanced capabilities. Some of these are listed below:

  • uNID authentication to the web interface
Users can login using their <uNID@utah.edu> email address, or with a personalized version (e.g., john.doe@utah.edu), and their CIS password . Users that do not have a uNID can still use the system and the web interface. They can simply create a user and password that is stored in the default user database.
  • Dynamic data sources for subscribers

The campus list server has the ability to subscribe “data sources” to your list. Campus organizational data can be used to create a list, including PeopleSoft data, like ORG ID. Sympa can currently do SQL searches against a MySQL database or LDAP searches. You can even subscribe another list to your list. This will mean a more up to date list for you.

  • Automatic bounce management

List owners receive automatic warnings about bouncing addresses. The system can also automatically unsubscribe addresses that bounce too much, easing your work as a list owner.

  • Moderation of messages via the email or web interfaces

You can set up your list so that messages get moderated before they are distributed. Designated moderators can manage messages by email or on the web interface.

  • Archive of messages that you can search and review later

The list serv software archives your list's messages by date and by subject line, so that you can go back and review threads or posts through the web interface. They can even be downloaded as a zip file.

  • Supports multiple email addresses for your subscribers

Subscribers who use multiple email addresses can have them all subscribed to your list. If they prefer, only their main or preferred email address will receive list mail, but all their addresses will be able to send mail to the list.

Subscribing to a list
