Campus UMail System

Everyone at the University of Utah receives a UMail email address from the '@utah.edu' domain. This email account is free. Students receive 50 MB of space for email with this account. The attachment size limit is also 50 MB. Staff and faculty receive 500 MB of space. This account should be used for University-associated emails only.

The default address format is your uNID@utah.edu. You must create a more personalized alias, such as firstname.lastname@utah.edu. See the Managing your Address section below.

You are encouraged to use this address to stay informed of important information and events at the University of Utah, and so that campus departments may contact you with approved communication (no spam). Students will be required to use this address for all official University communication as of Summer Semester 2007.

To Activate Your Campus UMail Address

New Users and Newly Admitted Students:

1 Your UMail account is created when you log onto My.Utah.edu the for the first time and follow Step 1 to create your secure password.
2 Then, follow Step 2 to log into the campus uNID tools and setup your personalized email alias at https://unid.utah.edu. You can set forwarding here, too.
3 * To begin using your new UMail account, you must log into the UMail system via the Web the first time at www.umail.utah.edu to activate your account. *

To Use Your Campus UMail Address

After you have logged into your UMail account via the Web at www.umail.utah.edu the first time, you'll need to decide how you want to access your UMail account. The email programs most easily integrated with UMail are:

Outlook and Entourage are available to all U of U students, staff and faculty for free download through the Office of Software Licensing. (Staff & faculty: you may need to have your department's software licensing coordinator order this for you.)

However, users can use any email program they prefer. There will be a loss of features, and not all programs will be supported by the Campus Help Desk beyond the standard email protocols. Please see the list of preferred and recommended email clients.

Configuration instructions are available for all of the recommended email clients. You can also contact the Campus Help Desk at 581-4000 option 1 for help.

Managing Your UMail Address

The default format of your campus UMail address is your uNID@utah.edu (u0012345@utah.edu). You must create a personalized "alias" in the Manage Email Aliases area of the uNID Account Tools. Your alias must contain your last name as it is recorded in the Campus Information Systems (PeopleSoft) records.

Email traffic to uNID@utah.edu addresses will eventually be blocked if coming from off campus. So, go set your personalized 'alias@utah.edu' UMail address so you will receive all your email before someone else with a similar name does! You are also encouraged to use this personalized UMail address as your preferred one in the Campus Information System. Students: don't forget that you must use your UMail address for all official campus communication.

Forwarding your UMail mail

Students who choose to have their UMail email messages forwarded to a private (unofficial) email address outside the official university network address, do so at their own risk. The University is not responsible for any difficulties that may occur in the proper or timely transmission or access of email forwarded to any unofficial email address, and any such problems will not absolve students of their responsibility to know and comply with the content of official communications sent to students' official UMail email addresses.

UMail users wanting to forward their UMail email messages may set forwarding for themselves in the uNID Tools. The address you forward to must already exist and be working. A confirmation will be emailed to that address to verify that it is working before we start forwarding mail to it. The forward request will be canceled if the confirmation request is not received and acted on within 72 hours. Instructions will be in the confirmation email. You may also choose to keep a copy of each message in your UMail mailbox.

Disclaimer: Be sure to keep your account active and cleaned up. Some accounts, such as Hotmail, are automatically blocked if you reach your storage limit, or automatically closed if you do not regularly login. If you choose to forward your email to a different account, remember you are responsible to ensure that you can receive official University communications forwarded to your personal account. The University of Utah is not responsible for lost or deleted email due to account closures or size restrictions.

UMail users can forward other email account mail (e.g., Yahoo, Gmail, etc.) to their UMail account. If you are a Windows XP user, you can easily set up a second email account using Outlook 2003. Outlook is a free download for U of U members through the Office of Software Licensing (www.software.utah.edu).

Spam Filtering

To reduce security risks and resource waste associated with delivering positively identified Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE)/spam to users' mailboxes, the Office of Information Technology began blocking positively identified UCE/spam messages to UMail mailboxes prior to Fall Semester 2007.

Individual users can request that ALL spam is tagged & delivered to their specific email address by calling the Campus Help Desk at 581-4000 option 1.
