The planning and work with our key vendors on this important project are paying off. We have ordered and received much of the equipment we need to get the system up and running. For you geeks out there, the system will be running on over 30 Dell blade servers and a state-of-the-art storage area network (Hitachi TagmaStore SAN) that will have over 50 terabytes of data (that's over 50,000 gigabytes) - all dedicated to email!

There is a test system already in place where around 150 users are actively testing the system as it is built from the ground up. This is where we do all of our trial and error testing so we can ensure the most stable email system possible when the system goes live.

Early adopters will be able to start using the system in January, 2006. In order to be an early adopter you will need to be able to configure your own email software on your workstation(s) and move any email you might need on the new system on your own. We will not be able to support large department moves to the new system until later in the year.

Student email accounts will be setup on the new system beginning in January as well. By the semester break at the end of May, 2006 all student email accounts will be running on the new system. More detailed information will be made available in the coming weeks about anything you may need to do in preparation for this change.

There have been some concerns voiced about the project being able to move forward on schedule. Certainly, there are many questions to be answered and problems yet to be faced but we are confident that we can meet our project timeline and have the system operational early next year.

Campus departments that currently run their own email system and want to take advantage of the the new system can contact us at emailprojectteam@lists.utah.edu. We can assist in plannning department migrations so that no mail or appointments are lost. The system should be available for department use in the March - April 2006 timeframe. We will gladly answer any questions you may have and help you plan your move to the new system.
