Campus Email
Campus Email System
In early 2003, an ITC subcommittee was formed to study the campus' email needs. An RFP was issued and many vendors responded. After narrowing the field to four vendor solutions, user trials were held in early 2005 and one vendor stood out for ease of use and functionality: Microsoft Exchange. A campus-wide, centralized Exchange-backed email system called UMail was implemented in 2006. The system does the following:
- Replaces campus and hospital GroupWise and iPlanet email systems with an integrated campus-wide deployment of Microsoft Exchange, including associated gateway services (virus scanning and spam filtering) and client applications.
- Delivers a unified system for all users that allows seamless operation of system functions, such as calendaring, instant messaging and email.
Additionally, the system will scale to allow as many users as needed, consolidate campus email service providers that prefer a centralized solution, and allow groups that wish to maintain their own email solutions to continue to do so.
The campus UMail project is a joint venture between the Office of Information Technology, Health Sciences Information Technology Services and other interested campus departments.
Free Email Accounts
Everyone at the University of Utah receives an address from the '@utah.edu' domain as part of the campus UMail system. This email account is free. Students receive 50 MB of space for email with this account. Staff receive 500 MB. The attachment size limit is also 50 MB. This account should be used for University-associated emails only.
Departments can take advantage of the campus UMail system free of charge, if they wish. Historically, campus departments have run their own email systems. GroupWise was used in many campus departments, including the Hospital and Health Science Center. Many of these departments have migrated to UMail or plan to migrate in the coming months. Your department may use an email system other than UMail; check with your local email administrator for information about your department email account.
UMail Address
Your UMail '@utah.edu' address is "turned on" when you log onto the Campus Information System (CIS) for the first time and create your secure password. You will use your uNID and CIS password to access your UMail account. (You must be a current student, faculty or staff member to use your UMail account.)
Campus members are encouraged to use their UMail address to stay informed of important information and events at the University of Utah, and so that campus departments and administration may contact you with approved official communication (no spam). The default address format is uNID@utah.edu. You must create a more personalized alias, such as firstname.lastname@utah.edu. See the Managing your Address section of the UMail page. Students will be required to use this address for all official University communication as of Spring semester 2007.
Checking your UMail
You can check your UMail account with recommended, supported free programs like Outlook 2003 for Windows and Entourage for Mac or on the Web through a secure Outlook Web Access program.
