Everyone at the University of Utah receives a campus UMail system address from the '@utah.edu' domain. This email account is free. Students receive 50 MB of space for email with this account. Staff receive 500 MB. The attachment size limit is also 50 MB. The default address format is uNID@utah.edu. This account should be used for University-associated emails only.
You must create a more personalized alias, such as firstname.lastname@utah.edu. See the Managing your Address section below.
You are encouraged to use this address to stay informed of important information and events at the University of Utah, and so that campus departments and administration may contact you with approved official communication (no spam). Students will be required to use this address for all official University communication as of Spring semester 2007.

Personalized email aliases must be unique and are first come first served, so, go set your personalized 'alias@utah.edu' email address before someone else with a similar name does! You are also encouraged to use this personalized campus email address as your preferred one in the CIS.Your UMail '@utah.edu' email can be forwarded to any other email address you prefer. The uNID Account Tools Mail Forwarding area explains how to forward mail going to this address to another email account, if desired.
Email will not be forwarded from student UMail accounts to other email systems (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc). These decisions were made (in part) based on the following three factors:
1- Guaranteed delivery of student information to an active U of U student email account.
2- Increase security of student information: once an email is transferred to an external email system, it is then in clear text and personal student information could be compromised.
3- Guaranteed accuracy of email addresses listed for students.
Students should not forward their email to another email account. Having email lost because of forwarding does not absolve a student from the responsibilities associated with communication sent to his or her official email address. The University is not responsible for the handling of email outside of the UMail System.
You can check your UMail account from the email client software of your choice, or you can check it on the Web through a secure program provided by the U. To check your email:
