Network Access
- WANA ports – plug your laptop into general access network ports in classrooms & common areas
- Wireless – learn about wireless at the U: map of wireless zones in campus buildings and common areas, client, authentication and configuration information; oversight by ITAC, NeRF and the Wireless Committee; supported by NetCom.
- VPN software –individual and department solutions so data stays encrypted, plus a campus IP address for the connection duration; supported by NetCom. (Note: remote access to department resources may require a departmentally-provided VPN.)
- Cell Phones –Your department administrator will work with NetCom or a cell phone representative to get you set up with a cell phone if your job requires it. The vendors who have contracted to work directly with University departments are Verizon, AT&T-Cingular, Sprint, and T-Mobile.
- Voice, Video and Data Transport – includes Point-to-Point fiber (a connection from one campus location to another using fiber in an existing conduit), OC3, DS3, DS1, and PRI circuits with the campus SONET, T1, DS1 and Frame Relay technology. Supported by NetCom
- Network Outage/Maintenance Info - brief descriptions of recent unplanned outages plus a list of scheduled network maintenance; subscribe to the email list to be notified by email and to post your own outage/maintenance reports.
- Point of Contact Database - The POC database is used to identify and contact the administrators for network notices and problems or anomalies discovered on their particular network. Those responsible for local networks must register. We work proactively with list members for security-based outages, etc. Supported by NetCom/Network Operations Center.
- Current Network Status - use I.E. browser
- Monitoring Services through NOC - Stats and data on your department network. Contact Bryan Morris at 5-9229 for more information.
- WAP Registration - The Wireless Access Point (WAP) database helps track the deployment and use of wireless network technology used on campus. Supported by NetCom.
- IP Allocation/DNS – authorized users can view, add, modify, and delete DNS records, including the creation and modification of new zones. Supported by IT Systems.
- IP Route Summarization – this project is underway, with all "old" IP space to be turned in by August 2005. Contact Bryan Morris at 5-9229 for details. Also, see the Summarization report.
- Training - The University offers some IT training through several campus departments, and other outside companies are listed.
Administrative Systems and Services
- Campus Information System – access to payroll, time reporting, personal info and more. Supported by Administrative Computing Services.
- Mailing lists – sign up for or create email lists relevant to your job. Supported by IT Systems.
- UMail Delegated Administration - allows departments to manage UMail accounts within their domain.
- Software - for work and home computers, including low cost anti-virus software. Supported through the Office of Software Licensing.
- E-commerce applications - required if your department has any e-commerce implementation.
- Security Audits – provided by the Information Security Office to make sure department systems are safe.
- Online Campus Directory – find other U employee & department information and keep yours updated. Supported by ACS.
- Committees and Groups (ITC, ITAC, IT Managers, Mac Managers) - Several independent committees exist to provide checks and balances, sound thinking and oversight to enterprise IT projects. Support offered by OIT.
- IT Managers email list - the "super-list" for all managers of campus networks and computer systems. List administration through OIT. Subscribe now.
- NetCom Support Center (NSC) - NSC provides computing support for desktop computers and workstations, manages Microsoft and Novell file, print and e-mail servers, and provides local area network (LAN) administration services for University departments.
- University Root Certificate - The campus root certificate is used to sign certificates for campus SSL websites, the secure.utah.edu wireless and radius system, and more. As more and more campus services start to use this internal CA, more campus computers will need to trust the CA certificate. The root CA certificate can be downloaded from http://www.it.utah.edu/services/networking/UofU_Public_CA_Cert.cer.
- Certificate Authority service - The Office of Information Technology offers a Certificate Authority service. Send email to ca@utah.edu for information about this free service or go to https://www.utah.edu/local/ca to submit certificate signing requests.
Academic Services
- Web Hosting – free website hosting for U departments and organizations. Support and maintenance through IT Systems.
- Website Registration - register your institutional websites with the U Webmasters Office.
- Instructional Media Services (IMS) - provides support and assistance in the use of Instructional Technology to the faculty, students and staff of the University of Utah.
- Media Solutions - creates websites, videos, databases, training modules, and presentations on contract for organizations on campus.
- Usenet News – a set of worldwide discussion groups. Contact news@news.cc.utah.edu for more information or to create a newsgroup of your own. Supported by IT Systems.
Personal Services
- My.Utah.edu Portal – login once and access many U secure services, customize it to suit your needs
- ‘utah.edu’ email address – free and can be personalized, forwarded, & accessed on the web
- Web accounts - disk space for storage and personal web pages
- Cell Phones - University employees are eligible for special discounts on personal cellular plans
