Fall Semester 2008 - Welcome Students!

Welcome to the University of Utah! General campus information for new students is available through New Student Orientation. In addition, many information technology (IT) resources and services are available to you. This guide was created to give you an idea of the electronic resources that are available and how they may be useful to you.

Office of IT staff will be on hand during the Residence Halls move-in weekend at the Chase Peterson Heritage Center, First Week at the Union and at PlazaFest on September 3rd. They will have information on all the services detailed below, and can answer any questions you may have.

Students Living on Campus

Students living in campus residence halls can learn more about Office of Information Technology services such as wireless campus network and Internet access, wired access (WANA), UTV cable television and student telephone services for you here.
Students living in University Student Apartments can learn more about Office of Information Technology services such as Internet access and student telephone services here.

The Basics

University Network ID (uNID) & password - Your uNID is your IT identity. It not only allows you to access your registration and records, but many other IT resources on campus (see the list below). To learn all about your uNID and how to set up your secure uNID password, see the uNID webpage.
My.Utah.edu Student Portal - A gateway to student services, records and information you can customize to meet your needs. Login to My.Utah.edu with your uNID and password and get access to many secure campus services like UMail, WebCT and the Campus Information System. You can make your own pages and organize the content and layout the way you want it.
Campus Information System (CIS) - The CIS is an important student resource. It is an online system that houses your student information, including your home address, your UMail address for official University communication, your grades and registration information. You access the CIS with your University Network ID (uNID) and password.
Email - Everyone at the University of Utah receives a free UMail address from the 'utah.edu' domain. You receive 50 MB of space for email with this account. The default address format is uNID@utah.edu and should be personalized. You can access it through the Web at www.umail.utah.edu or your favorite local email program, or forward it to an account you check regularly.

The More Advanced Stuff

Network Access

Wireless – uconnect wireless zones in many campus buildings, residence halls and areas. Requires a one-time configuration of your laptop or mobile devices.
Student Computing Labs - labs for student use across campus, many use your uNID & password
WANA ports – wired general access connections for your laptop in classrooms & common areas
Web Proxy – connect to electronic library resources remotely via one of two web proxy options
VPN software –virtual private network connection so data stays encrypted plus campus network access
Campus Modem Pool – free (limited) dial-in access to campus network & Internet

Administrative Systems and Services

Software - for home computers, including free anti-virus software, from Software Licensing.
Online Campus Directory – find other U student, employee & department information and keep yours updated
UMail Address List - accessed via your UMail account, find other U student and staff UMail addresses

Academic Services

WebCT - online courses and course resources
Personal Web Accounts – free web space for web pages, storage, etc. for U students
Uonline - fully online semester-based courses
Electronic Library resources - access to indexes, databases, and course reserves

Personal Services

Cell Phones - University students get special discounts on Cingular cellular telephone services.
Pre-paid Long Distance - low cost domestic and international long distance from any wired or cell phone
