Do you Recommend any Software to Access the Internet and the Campus Network?

There are several good programs available for the PC and Mac that you can use to access the Internet. The programs recommended here are the ones we have the most experience with and can provide the best assistance on should you need help. In many instances, the recommended programs are provided by the major computer manufacturers.

The software we recommend uses the following Internet protocols.

  • Dial-up: TCP/IP and PPP
  • Email: RPC over HTTPs
alternate: Secure POP or Secure IMAP and SMTP
  • File transfer: secure ftp - You must use a client that supports secure FTP .
  • www: http
  • Usenet news groups: nntp (Note: The campus news services will be retired in 2007.)

If you have a favorite Internet program that's not on the list, odds are it will work just fine if it uses one of the protocols listed above. You can also use terminal emulation software (Kermit, Term, zterm, etc.) for basic connectivity to campus computers.
