How to Use this Manual

This document describes how to configure the Actiontec DSL Gateway to connect to the University of Utah DSL service. If at any time you have a question or cannot resolve a problem that you are having during the installation process, please contact the Campus Help Desk at 581-4000, option 1.

Unpacking your modem

Please follow these instructions for setting up your DSL connection to the University of Utah MegaCentral. Remove all of the contents from the box. Do not use the cd-rom that is included with your Actiontec Gateway with the yellow sticker on it that says: Put the CD-ROM in first. This is designed to work only for Qwest ISP customers.

Setting up the Actiontec DSL Gateway

Unpack the DSL Gateway, the power cord, the yellow Cat V (Ethernet) cable, and the modem cord. Do not use the CD-ROMs that come in the box.

DSL Gateway Parts
First, plug one end of the modem cord into the phone jack in the wall. Plug phone jack into wall recepticle.
Then plug the other end into the jack labeled DSL on the back of the modem. Plug phone jack into DSL modem..
Second, plug the yellow Cat V (Ethernet) cable into your computer's network card Plug Ethernet cable into computer's network card.
and plug the other end into port 1 on the DSL modem. Plug Ethernet cable into DSL modem.
Third, insure that your PC is fully booted, and then plug the power cord into the modem. Boot PC and then plug power cord into DSL modem.
Then plug it into the wall or your power strip. Plug modem power cord into wall electrical socket.
A series of lights come on. The first light to go green is the Power light. The modem's power light comes on.

Second, the light labeled Internet turns solid green.

If this light does not turn on, you need to contact Qwest and have them service your DSL line.

Second the modem's Internet light comes on.

Once the power light is solid green and the Internet light is solid green, make sure that the right-most Ethernet LED is green. This means that your PC can communicate with the modem.

It should look like the above picture. Now you are ready to configure the modem.

Next, the Ethernet Network light comes on.

 

Configuring your modem

Make sure that your computer is configured to Automatically Obtain an IP Address (Network Control Panel). To learn how to change your network address, click here or call 581-4000 for additional assistance. Next, open your Internet ExplorerT or Netscape NavigatorT browser window. In the address line, enter 192.168.0.1 and press Enter.

This opens the configuration menu so that you can set up the modem to work for your specific connection. The window should look like this.

Click on Setup / Configuration to enter that menu.

The DSL gateway can be configured in either bridged mode (used when connecting one computer to the DSL gateway) or routed mode (used when connecting multiple computers to the DSL gateway). To continue the installation, select the mode that best describes your installation.
