Faceplate Location and Description
- Locate the faceplate that you would like to use in your dorm room. There are two faceplates in each dorm room. One is usually on the left hand side; the other is on the right hand side as you walk into the room.
- The phone jack is the top left jack on the faceplate. The data connection is on the bottom left hand side of the faceplate. The coax for UTV cable TV is on the right hand side of the faceplate.
- See the labeled connection points in Figure 1.
Cable Types and Descriptions
- To connect your computer to WANA, you will need a Category 5 patch cord, also called a network cable or Ethernet cable. You can purchase these cables at the University Bookstore (either location) and most office supply stores.
- A Cat5 cable is round and much larger than a phone cable, which is usually flat. Please see Figure 2.

- Check to make sure that there is dial tone on the phone line.
- Turn on your computer and make sure that your network card is set up for DHCP.
- Launch your Internet browser (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape) to see if the WANA login page comes up.

My Wana connection just stopped working. How do i get it back?
WANA works on a DHCP server. Some times the computer will hold on to the last IP address given. The next time you logon, it will not connect. If you are using a Windows operating system, you can release the IP address manually.
Windows 98-ME
- Go to run and type in winipcfg. This will bring up the IP Adapter.
- Make sure your Ethernet is listed for the IP Adapter.
- Press release all and then renew all.
- Exit the program and reboot.
Windows 2000-XP
- Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. This will take you to a DOS Prompt.
- Type in ipconfig /release and press Enter.
- Type in ipconfig /renew and press Enter.
- Exit out and return to your web Browser.
