PPP Troubleshooting

Because of the many different distributions of Linux and the complexity of each different distribution/version, it is very difficult to write a how-to for each Linux distribution. Much of the information is already available on the web. The following instructions may not work for everyone, but they are a good place to start.

Setting up your Modem

Setting up a modem under Linux can be a bit tricky. Many of the new modems are "winmodems", that is, they require software to do some of the work for them. (This is most often windows, but some winmodems are starting to be supported by Linux.) Generally if you have a winmodem you won't be able to use it under Linux, but check the hardware support pages of your distribution to be sure.

If you already have your modem configured, skip to Configuring PPP.

If you need to configure your modem, check out the following web page: Modem HOWTO

Configuring PPP

Once your modem is properly set up you need to give your system the necessary information to connect to the University. http://www.linuxhq.com/ldp/howto/ISP-HOOKUP-HOWTO.html explains how to to do this. Copy down the server information before proceeding.
