Remote Access Information
This document describes how to connect your Macintosh computer with Mac OS 8.5 or higher (up to Mac OS X) to the campus network. There are three components of the Mac OS that control remote access to the internet: the TCP/IP, Modem, and Remote Access control panels.
Configuring the TCP/IP Control Panel
The TCP/IP control panel configures the internet protocols used when connected to the internet. To configure TCP/IP:
Open the TCP/IP control panel by clicking on
the Apple Menu, choosing Control Panels from the list and selecting
TCP/IP from the pop-out menu. This opens the TCP/IP control panel window.

Click on the Connect via pop-up menu and select PPP
In the Setup box, click on the Configure pop-up menu and select using PPP Server.
Click in the Name server addr box and enter
the following IP address
155.101.201.10
155.101.115.10
Close the TCP/IP window. At the save changes
prompt, click the Save button.
Configuring the Modem Control Panel
The modem control panel selects the port the modem is connected to and selects modem specific configuration information. To configure the Modem control panel.
Open the Modem control panel by clicking on
the Apple Menu, choosing Control Panels from the list and selecting
Modem from the pop-out menu
Click the Connect via: pop-out menu and select the port to which the modem is connected.
In the Setup box, click the Modem pop-out menu and select the model of your modem.
Close the Modem window. At the Save Changes
dialog box, click the Save button.
Configuring the Remote Access Control Panel
The Remote Access control panel is used to dialup and connect to the internet. To configure Remote Access:
Open the Remote Access control panel by clicking
on the Apple Menu, choosing Control Panels from the list and selecting
Remote Access from the pop-out menu.

Click the triangle next to Setup to open the setup box
Click in the name box and enter your uNID
Click in the Password box (or press <TAB>) and enter your password. If you want Remote Access to remember your password, check the Save password box.
Click in the Number box and enter the phone number to dial (924-0783 for the 60 minute modems, 924-0639 for the 15 minute modems).
Click the Options button. In the Options window,
click the tab labeled Protocol. Click on the Use Protocol pop-out
menu and select PPP. Check the Connect when starting TCP/IP applications
box. Click the OK button.

Close the Remote Access window. At the Save
changes dialog box, click the Save button.
Connecting to the Internet
There are two methods you can use to connect to the internet with the above configuration.
Method 1
Open the Remote Access control panel and click the Connect button. When done using the internet, open the Remote Access control panel and click the disconnect button.
Method 2
Run an internet application (such as Netscape or Eudora). With the Connect when Starting TCP/IP applications turned on, this automatically starts the Remote Access control panel. To disconnect from the internet, quit the internet application. To verify you have disconnected, you can open the Remote Access control panel. If the button is labeled Connect, you have been disconnected from the internet.
Troubleshooting
If you are having trouble
connecting to the internet, connect using method 1. At the bottom of
the Remote Access window is a status box. Watch the messages that are
displayed and note when the connect process stops.
Typical Problems and how to Correct Them
The Connection was Terminated Unexpectedly
If the status message displayed in the Remote Access control panel shows Authentication failed message, either the Network ID or the password has been entered incorrectly. Re-enter your NID and password. Make sure the Caps-lock key is off. Passwords are case sensitive. If the connection attempt just stops without any status message, the problem might be with the phone line.
Can't Establish a Reliable Connection
Error correction and compression incompatibilities can cause this problem. Turn off Allow error correction and compression in the Remote Access control panel (Options button: Protocol tab). Other causes include a bad phone line or connection, modem incompatibility, call waiting enabled. To disable call waiting, add *70, to the phone number.
The Connection Attempt Failed
The modem selected in Modem control panel is not compatible with your modem.
Modem Not Responding Properly
The modem selected in Modem control panel is not compatible with your modem. Make sure correct modem is selected.
Modem Doesn't Hang Up After Connection is Closed
Modem selected in Modem control panel is not compatible with your modem. Make sure correct modem is selected.
If your modem type is not listed in the Modem
control panel, contact the modem manufacturer for the proper configuration
file.
