Note: You must have root privileges to install the VPN client for Mac OS X.   You can save the VPN client download file to any directory. For ease of installation, save the installer on your desktop.

Mac OS X System Requirements

The VPN client for Mac OS X runs on any Macintosh computer running OS X Version 10.2 or later. Click on the apple icon in the title bar, then select 'About this Mac' to verify your version.

Note: Classic Mac applications do not make use of the VPN tunnel.

Mac OS X VPN Client Distribution Files

  • 4.9.01.0100 - latest VPN client for Macs with 10.x and higher as well as Intel Macs (14.4 MB)
  • 4.8.00.0490 - VPN client for Macs with 10.x and higher as well as Intel Macs (14.4 MB)
  • 4.8.00.080 - VPN client for Macs with 10.x and higher as well as Intel Macs (14.4 MB)
  • 4.7.00.0510 - VPN client for Macs with OS X 10.2 -10.3 (not higher)
  • uofu.pcf - the user/group I.D. profile (1KB)

To download the VPN client file, hold down the control key, move the cursor over the link and click the mouse button. A pop-up menu appears. For Safari, select Download linked file as. In Internet Explorer, select Download link to disk. Click OK.

To download the file uofu.pcf, Ctrl+click and select Save Linked File As... in Safari, or Save Link As... in Firefox, or the equivalent option of your browser. Note: Safari often saves the file as "uofu.pcf.txt", so users need to take off the ".txt" when it prompts for a file name or rename the file after it is downloaded.

Unpacking the VPN Client Files

The VPN client is shipped as a disk image file. To uncompress the file:

Step 1. Download the VPN client and save it to the desktop.

Step 2. Double click on the file. This creates a disk image and mounts it on the desktop.

To install the VPN client for Mac OS X

If you are running any previous version of the VPN client, you must first uninstall it.

Run the CiscoVPN installer application.

  • Double click the CiscoVPN Client application.
  • Click on the Continue button.
  • Click on the Continue button of the Software License Agreement page
  • Click the Agree button to continue the installation.
  • Select the installation Volume and click the Continue button.
  • Click the Install button and enter the Admin password and click OK.
  • Click Close on the Install Software page.
  • Go to the Applications folder and drag the Vpnclient icon to the Dock.
  • Reboot the system.
  • Launch the VPN client and click on the Import button.
  • Browse to the 'uofu.pcf' file downloaded above and click Open.
  • A message box will appear stating the file was imported successfully.

Notes on Running the Client

Before running the VPN client, you must first establish a connection to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

To run the VPN client:

  • Select VPNClient from the Dock.
  • Select uofu in the Connection Entries tab and click the Connect button in the toolbar.
  • Enter your Network ID and password when prompted and click OK.
  • When you are finished using the VPN service, click the Disconnect button in the toolbar.

Uninstalling a previous VPN Client for Mac OS X

To uninstall a previous version of the VPN client for Mac OS X:

  • Open the Terminal application (found in the Applications/Utilities folder).
  • Run the following command:
    sudo /usr/local/bin/vpn_uninstall
  • Enter your password
  • You are prompted to remove all profiles and certificates.

If you answer yes, all binaries, startup scripts, certificates, profiles, and any directories that were created during the installation process are removed.

If you answer no, all binaries and startup scripts are removed, but certificates, profiles, and the vpnclient.ini file remain.
