What is autodiscover.umail.utah.edu?

Autodiscover is an Exchange 2007 web service that can be used to autoconfigure email clients, including Microsoft Office Outlook 2007. In additiona to providing basic account settings, the service also provides information about additional Exchange 2007 web services that newer clients use in order to access features such as the offline address book and free/busy information. (For detailed info see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124251.aspx) .

Why did I start getting autodiscover.umail.utah.edu pop-ups?

January 2009, we began moving alpha testers to Exchange 2007. In order for testers who are using Outlook 2007 to have a fully functional client, we had to add the DNS records necessary to find the autodiscover web service. Unfortunately, even if your mailbox has not been moved to Exchange 2007, the Outlook 2007 client is programmed to periodically look for the autodiscover service.

What do I do about the pop-ups?

If you check "Don't ask me about this website again" and click on the "Allow" button then the pop-ups will stop. If you are concerned about doing this, please contact your local IT support staff or Help Desk for verification that this is an appropriate action to take.

I let the autodiscover do it's thing, why is it taking so long for my Outlook client to load?

The delay occurs because by default, Outlook attempts to connect to the Exchange servers via TCP/IP (MAPI) (which we do not permit for security reasons). Autodiscover doesn't configure a setting that is necessary in the UMail environment: "On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP". The auto configuration settings were designed for Corporate environments and are not currently customizable. You (or your local IT staff) can check the required box and eliminate the delay by doing the following:

  • Go to "Tools/Account Settings"
  • Highlight "Microsoft Exchange" and choose "Change"
  • Select "More Settings" > "Connection/Exchange Proxy Settings"
  • Choose "On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP"
