Configuring Outlook 2003 for the UMail System

Microsoft Outlook is the recommended email program for UMail, the new campus email system, for those using a Windows computer. For the greatest functionality, you should use Outlook 2003 and Windows XP with Service Pack 1 and Hotfix Q331320 or higher installed. To check which version you have, open Outlook and choose About Microsoft Outlook from the Help menu.

These instructions work for configuring Outlook 2007, as well.

Configuring Outlook

  • Click Start > Control Panel > Mail.
  • Choose Show Profiles.
  • Click on Add.
  • Enter UMail as the Profile Name and click OK.
  • Select Add a new e-mail account and click Next.
  • Select Microsoft Exchange Server and click Next. You'll see the Exchange Server Settings window.
  • Enter 'public.xds.umail.utah.edu' as the Microsoft Exchange Server and check Use Cached Exchange Mode.
  • Enter your uNID as the User Name. Click the More Settings button (cancel login prompts or alerts).

  • Click on the Connection Tab and check Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP then click the Exchange Proxy Settings button.
  • The window below will appear. Enter the URL 'www.umail.utah.edu.'
  • Check Mutually authenticate the session when connecting with SSL and enter 'msstd:www.umail.utah.edu'
  • The Proxy Authentication setting should be Basic Authentication.

  • Finally, click OK, then OK.
  • Click Check Name and enter 'uNID@umail.utah.edu' for your user name (i.e., 'u1234567@umail.utah.edu'), then enter your password and click OK.

Your uNID should be replaced by your full name and both it and the server name should now be underlined. The server name value should no longer be 'public.xds.umail.utah.edu.'
