Can I forward or redirect my UMail email to another email location?

Students who choose to have their UMail email messages forwarded to a private (unofficial) email address outside the official university network address, do so at their own risk. The University is not responsible for any difficulties that may occur in the proper or timely transmission or access of email forwarded to any unofficial email address, and any such problems will not absolve students of their responsibility to know and comply with the content of official communications sent to students' official UMail email addresses.

UMail users wanting to forward their UMail email messages may set forwarding for themselves in the uNID Tools. The address you forward to must already exist and be working. A confirmation will be mailed to that address to verify that it is working before we start forwarding mail to it. The forward request will be canceled if the confirmation request is not received and acted on within 72 hours. Instructions will be in the confirmation email. You may also choose to keep a copy of each message in your UMail mailbox.

Please see http://www.it.utah.edu/services/email/umail/index.html#forwarding for more information.

How do I set up Outlook 2003 for my UMail accounts?

Instructions for setting up Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 are at http://www.it.utah.edu/services/helpDesk/emailWebhelp/outlookconfig.html.

Where can I find POP/IMAP server connection settings for UMail?

To configure email software other than Outlook or Entourage for your UMail account, see www.it.utah.edu/services/helpDesk/emailWebhelp/umailpopimap.html for information on POP, IMAP, Pine and AppleMail server settings.

How do I increase my space quotas?

U staff members whose departments use the UMail system should request an increase from their department email administrator.   Others should contact the Campus Help Desk at 581-4000 option 1.    UMail account space can only be increased for a valid University-related reason.

How do I stop getting spam in my UMail account?

The best ways to handle spam are to add the [UCE] filtering rules and turn on Junk Mail handling (via the Web or Outlook 2003) - see instructions below.

Managing Junk Email Lists (OWA)

Outlook Web Access will send junk email to your Junk Email folder automatically; however, there may be some senders or recipients you want to keep from automatically being filed in your Junk Email folder and others you may want to block from your Inbox. Follow the steps below to manage these lists:

  • Click the Options section button.
  • Click Manage Junk Email Lists under Privacy and Junk Email Prevention.
  • Select the list you want to modify. Select Safe Senders to modify the list of addresses you want to accept messages from. Select Safe Recipients to modify the list of distribution lists you are a part of and want to receive email for. Select Blocked Senders to modify the list of addresses you don’t want to receive email from.
  • Click Add to add an address, Edit to edit an address, or Remove to remove an address on the list.
  • Click OK.

Junk Mail Handling in Outlook 2003

  • On the Actions toolbar, click Junk E-mail.
  • Then select Junk E-mail options.
  • In the bulleted items for Junk and for Adult Content messages, in each of the first lists, click move. When you click move, the second list on each line will change from a list of colors to a list of folder destinations.
  • You can leave the default destination (Junk E-mail), click Deleted Items, or click Other folder and choose or create one.
  • To enable the feature, click Turn On.
  • Repeat steps 3 through 5 for both the Junk and Adult Content lines.
