Campus UMail System - How To
Using a Handheld/Smartphone/Smartphone PDA with the Umail System
To sync your handheld device "over-the-air" with the campus UMail email/calendaring system, you'll need to be aware of the following:
1. The UMail system natively supports only the following Operating Systems:
- Windows Mobile 5 and above
- Windows Pocket PC 2003
- Palm OS
2. Some Internet-enabled handheld PDAs, such as the Dell Axim, smartphones such as the Motorola Q, and smartphone PDAs such as the Palm Treo 650, are able to connect both over-the-air (Server ActiveSync) and via a desktop ActiveSync connection to UMail data such as email messages, address books, calendars, tasks, and more.
3. Many Internet-enabled handheld devices are not able to natively sync with Microsoft Exchange. These are not supported by campus. For PDAs and handheld devices that don't appear above, here are some basic steps that should allow you to set up synchronization with the UMail Exchange server. Please also work with your local mail administrator to see if your device will synchronize with UMail.
- Important: Remove all software you are currently using to synch with a previous email system.
- Use the software that came with your device (or download it from the vendor's website).
- Use the vendor provided Outlook conduit.
- Use the standard IMAP or POP settings to configure an email client on your PDA.
4. Most supported devices are pre-installed with the root certificate needed for Exchange ActiveSync.
5. A for-fee service called Mobile Office is also available to sync your email, calendar and contacts for Blackberry, Palm OS, and Windows Mobile devices.
