Can I set up a department or organization website?

YES! The Office of Information Technology hosts websites for departments, colleges, programs, labs, committees, and some student organizations. We also provide space for student, staff, and faculty personal websites. We can provide URLs of the form http://web.utah.edu/yoursite/ or http://www.yourthing.utah.edu/ (in some cases).  We currently host 200 websites.

For more information, contact the webmaster at webmaster@cc.utah.edu.

Can you help me with website design?

Media Solutions is a group within the Office of IT that specializes in web design, web application development, video, and media conversion. Departments may call Media Solutions for help in designing web sites (581-6113).

What is the cost to host a website?

Website hosting is provided free of charge to academic users and student groups and clubs.

Is there a size restriction for each web site?

Personal web sites are limited to less than 10MB. Exceptions are made for academic users, student groups and clubs.

What about e-commerce - is there a charge?

There are very strict rules about e-commerce at the U. Students, staff and faculty may not use personal web pages for commercial purposes.

Contact the University webmaster with departmental e-commerce questions, at ecommerce@media.utah.edu or 581-6113.

How much disk space can I use on the server?

Users currently have a 10 mb quota on the home.utah.edu server. This includes webpages and any other files you want to store in your home directory.

You may use up to 50 mb of disk space for a period of one week, after which you must drop below 10 mb.

If you are over your quota, you will not be able to write to or create files on the server.

How do I access library resources from home?

Many library resources are restricted and only available to the University community. To protect those resources, access from off-campus is blocked. However, we do provide means of getting to those resources from off-campus. All require that you have a campus Network ID.

  • The simplest and most convienent way for students to get to library resources is through the Student Portal at https://My.Utah.edu. Once you authenticate, you can get immediate access by clicking on the Libraries and Research link.
  • Proxy server. You can configure your web browser to use the campus proxy server (proxy.utah.edu). The proxy server authenticates you and then requests the web pages for you. This tricks the library server into believing you are on campus. See the Library web pages for details on configuring your web browser to use the proxy server. After you have finished using the campus resources, you should turn off the proxy server option.
  • Your third option is to download the VPN client from our website at www.it.utah.edu/services/connected/vpn/index.html.  After you download it, extract the files to your desktop, or somewhere on your computer where you can find them, and it will create a folder called 4.0 VPN and PCF. Inside this folder is a setup.exe icon. Double click it to install the software. After installation you will need to connect to the Internet.  Once connected, go to Start-Programs-Cisco Systems VPN Client-VPN Client, and then click on connect. You will be prompted for your University Network ID and password.
  • Free campus modem pool. The University maintains a free modem pool (with restrictions). Dialing into these modems gives you access to the campus network as if you were at a machine on campus. For information on how to use the free modems, check the campus modem pool web pages.
