General Phone FAQs
What is a TEO?
TEO stands for Telephone Equipment Order.
It's the request we need to start any new service or make changes
to existing services. TEOs can be submitted electronically
via an online form or using the more traditional paper-based
form. If you have questions on how to fill out the TEO,
contact your Account Executive for help. If you don't know
who your Account Executive is, contact the Campus Help Desk
(helpdesk@utah.edu or
581-4000) and they can put you in touch with the right person.
What is ISDN?
ISDN stands for Integrated Service Digital Network.ISDN is a worldwide standard for digital telecommunications services. Designed to help overcome deficiencies in current public switched phone network. ISDN provids common standards for voice, data and signaling through digital transmission circuits.
The most commonly used service applied to desktop is the 2B+D or Basic Rate Interface (BRI). ISDN uses four unshielded phone wires to deliver two 64 Kbs channels for voice and data and a 16 Kbps channel for signaling and control information. This 16 Kbps channel allows for call forwarding, waiting etc. Faster than analog modems but slower than LAN speeds.
Broadband ISDN extends the ISDN capabilities to services in
the Gigabit range. ISDN comes today in two basic flavors – BRI,
which is 144,000 bits per second and designed for the desktop
and in North America PRI, which is 1,544,000 bits per second.
The B channels can transport voice and data simultaneously while
the D channel transmits call control messages and user packet
data.
What is DSL?
DSLstands for Digital Subscriber Line. It allows you to talk on the phone and surf the internet at the same time with no need to purchase an additional telephone line. DSL lines typically operate on one pair of wires like a normal analog phone line. With DSL, a subscriber can get data transmission speeds that are 22 times faster than a standard 28.8k modem.
Why is my phone number incorrect in the Campus Directory/UMail Global
Address book?
This information is based on the data submitted by your departmental payroll reporter. If the information is incorrect, your payroll reporter will need to submit an updated PAN form with the correct phone numbers. This may take as long as 72 hours to get updated in both systems.
How do I keep my student information out of the Campus Directory?
You will need to sign the FERPA privacy act, which prohibits the University from releasing any information about you. You can do this by logging into the Campus Information System (https://gate.acs.utah.edu), and clicking on the “Change Release Authorization” under “Student Records,” or print out the form at http://www.sa.utah.edu/regist/documents/prohibitDirRelease.pdf, complete and return it to the Registrar’s office.
