FAQs: Long Distance Calling
How do I use the toll free number for the University?
The University's toll free number can be used if someone out-of-town needs to call you, as long as your department agrees to pay the charges for the call. Use the toll free number as follows:
- Dial the University's number: 1 + 800 + 444-8638
- When the campus operator answers, give him/her the University extension of the person you are calling.
- When that extension is answered, the campus operator will
announce the call (if the answering party accepts toll free calls).
If the call is accepted, the charges will automatically be billed to that extension.
Are University long distance calling cards available?
MCI calling cards are available for University personnel
who need to make phone calls outside the local Salt Lake City calling region while travelling on University business.
To obtain a calling card, the department head must send a request
to NetCom indicating the individual user's name, employee ID
number, and chartfield billing number. All calls made using an
MCI card will be itemized on individual monthly bills. For more
information on how to obtain a calling card, call extension 1-4000 option 2.
Can I place a personal long-distance call from a University phone?
Personal long-distance calls may not be billed to your University extension. If you need to make a personal long-distance call from a University extension, you must do so through an operator assisted call, or by accessing your own long-distance provider. For more information regarding personal long-distance calls, dial extension 1-4000 option 2.
- To make an operator assisted call, Dial 9 + 0 + area code + 7-digit number. After you have dialed, an operator will request billing information (your home telephone number, calling card number or collect calling information).
- To access another long-distance carrier, dial that carrier's local or 800 access number.
- To use your personal long-distance calling card, follow the
instructions provided by your particular long-distance carrier.
Can I block long-distance dialing on a phone?
Yes, there are a variety of toll restrictions
available to choose from depending on the individual departments
and circumstances. These restrictions can be requested at the
time the order for service is being placed. Each restriction
requires that the individual telephone line be programmed accordingly.

- All calls made using authorization codes will be itemized on individual monthly bills.
