IP Address Space Management

Domain Name Service, or DNS, is the system by which a computer or host's name is mapped to its IP address, for name-to-address translation. The University of Utah's DNS server maintains a database of domain names (host names) and their corresponding IP addresses. OIT Network Operations uses DNS management tools for the manipulation and serving of DNS data.

Request a Service

IT managers at the University can request IP address space management services through orderit.utah.edu. Services include the following:

Request a Host Name Addition, Deletion or Change
Departments can request a host name change in the U’s Domain Name Service (DNS) for an existing zone (allocated domain).

New Sub-Domain
Departments can request a new sub-domain in an existing zone.  These requests are usually for a third or fourth level domain zone (i.e., fourth.third.utah.edu) to contain multiple host name records.

Access to a Domain Zone
Departments may request permission to manage a particular name or IP space through the centralized IP management system (IP Controls).  This will allow a requester to add and remove various DNS records for an appropriate zone(s).

Request a new or retire an old network
Departments can request a new IP network (a range of IP addresses) or retire an unused IP network.

High Availability DHCP Services
Departments can request DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) to automatically assign IP addresses to desktops, laptops, workstations, printers, and handheld devices on their network.
Note:  Not all devices have the capability to use DHCP.
