DNS resolution
OUTAGE: DNS resolution of on-campus addresses for slave zones
DATE: September 9th, 2008
START TIME: 8:00 AM Tuesday, 9/9/08
END TIME: 12:15 PM Tuesday, 9/9/08
An unanticipated consequence of the DNS roll back this morning caused several DNS servers on campus to fail when resolving certain on-campus DNS records. In particular, CHPC, Marriott Library, ACS, and the Natural History Museum were impacted. While the cause of this failure is now known and has been fixed, the reason why this resulted in a failure of DNS service is still unknown. At this point a detailed post-mortem is being undertaken to discover the exact mechanism of this failure and come up with a mitigation plans for any future DNS changes.
