Point-to-Point Fiber
Point-to-Point fiber is a connection from one campus location to another using fiber in an existing conduit. The fiber is 'lit' or made active by the department and is not part of the campus backbone. University of Utah colleges, departments or buildings that need fiber connections outside of the campus backbone network can have fast, reliable, data connections which are fully configurable by the responsible LAN administrator. All fiber is a campus resource and is owned by the University of Utah campus.
Benefits
- LAN administrator has full control of resource
- Analog video can be sent
- VLAN spanning the core
- Security can be greatly improved
- Bandwidth is no longer shared with backbone - 1Gb to 10Gb speeds are commercially available
There is a $20.00/month per pair maintenance fee on new fiber orders. One-time installation costs are calculated by NetCom on each project through a bid process.
