Telephone Services: 10-digit Dialing
New 385 Area Code Added
Qwest is adding a new 385 area code to the existing 801 area code region. This will require 10-digit dialing whenever you place a local call from the 801 area code. Mandatory 10 digit dialing starts on March 1, 2009. Start dialing 10 digits now to be prepared for the change. Beginning March 1, 2009, calls dialed with 7 digits will not go through. If you forget and dial 7 digits you will receive an intercept informing you to dial 10 digits.
OIT has made the necessary programming changes to every phone system on campus for the new dialing format.
For the time being, we have plenty of telephone numbers in the University’s telephone number range to continue to install new numbers in the 801 area code.

Things that Need to Change:
You will need to reprogram telephone sets/fax machines with auto-dial/speed dial locations to include the 10-digit format for all local numbers. |
|
If you have call forwarding to a local number, re-enter existing local numbers with 10-digit dialing format. |
|
If you have voice mail out call notification/message to your pager or cell phone, you will need to change the outcall number to the 10-digit format. (Octel users can change this themselves; T3 users must submit a trouble ticket to the help desk at 801-581-4000 option 1 to request the change.) |
|
Update any personal voice mail messages that reference phone and pager numbers to include the 10-digit dialing format. |
|
If your office uses a telephone menu tree that provides phone numbers, you will need to update your message to reflect 10-digit dialing. |
|
Update all printed material such as your business stationery, business cards or any other advertising materials or logos to be sure they include the 10-digit dialing format. |
|
Webmasters: If you have not already done so, you will need to change your website information to reflect the 10 digit telephone numbers. |
Things that will Remain the Same:
- Your existing telephone number will remain the same
- You must still dial 9 +911 to reach 911 emergency services.
