Telephone Lines
Basic Overview
A telephone line in simplest terms is your dial tone. The line refers to the transmission medium that transports a voice call from one place to another.
Within each of the voice systems in use on campus, there are different types of phone lines. They include:
- Analog: analog service is referred to as plain old telephone service (POTS), providing dial tone and access to nationwide and international carriers.
- Digital: digital service provides dial tone and access to nationwide and international carriers. The digital line provides more flexibility and features than the standard analog line. You may add additional lines at a minimal charge, have more than one line appearance of your department's published number for more efficient call handling, and a visual message waiting indicator to let you know that you have voice messages waiting. With multiple line appearances; you will be able to see if the line is in use.
- IP (Internet Protocol): (only available on the Coral voice system, not in wide use at this time)
You have a telephone line based on the voice system that your department is using: Coral, Centrex, or flat lines through Qwest (for some off-campus locations). Telephone sets options are based on the kind of phone line they use.
