Web Hosting

Web Hosting Services

The Office of Information Technology hosts websites for University departments, colleges, programs, labs, committees, and some student organizations. URLs can be provided in the forms:

  • http://www.yoursite.utah.edu/ (in some cases)

Websites are provided free of charge to academic users and student groups and clubs. To set up web services, contact the webmaster at webmaster@cc.utah.edu, or call the Campus Help Desk at 1-4000, option 1.

Student Club Websites

We don't provide domain names for student clubs but we can provide a web address (URL) in the form http://web.utah.edu/yourclub/. Officers of the club or people they designate would have access to update the website (via FTP using their uNID). We generally check ASUU's list of student groups at www.asuu.utah.edu/student_groups/ to determine the validity or status of the club at the University.

To request a student club website, send email to webmaster@cc.utah.edu. We need the full name of the organization, contact information for an officer, and uNIDs for any person or persons who will be maintaining the site. Also include a short term or label for your club; this would be the unique part of the URL. This could be an abbreviation or acronym, a keyword, or part of the organization's name, as in these three examples:

  • http://web.utah.edu/pisa for Pacific Islander Student Association
  • http://web.utah.edu/swing for Swing Kids Dance Club
  • http://web.utah.edu/graduate_school for The Graduate School

Once we have received all your information, and upon verification, we can usually get the website space set up within 3 business days. Instructions are sent when the web space is set up.

Advanced Services

Several advanced services are available upon request for college, department, and organization sites.
For departmental sites hosted as www.department.utah.edu, they include:

  • PHP
  • CGI/Perl
  • MySQL

Access Control

All sites can use access control mechanisms, limiting who can access content on a site. Departmental sites with registered host names (www.department.utah.edu), can also optionally use SSL.

Back-Ups and restores

  • All OIT-hosted web site content is copied to a "snapshot" directory each evening. A weekly snapshot is taken, as well. It is a straightforward process to restore client site files from the snapshot.
  • Changed files are backed up nightly to tape.  Tapes are retained for 60 days.  Some tapes are kept off-site. Restores from tapes are more complex.

To request a restore, site webmasters should contact the Campus Help Desk at (801) 581-4000, option 1.  The request should include the site name and content directory, the files needed, the date, and procedures for contacting the site webmaster.

OIT will contact the site webmaster to confirm details and discuss where and how files the files will be restored.

Information and Updates from OIT

To ensure that OIT can reach you if there are changes in our web and other services, consider having your e-mail automatically forwarded from your default e-mail address (uNID@utah.edu - free and automatic for all campus members) to your preferred e-mail address if your default e-mail address is mostly inactive.

Please see the Campus Help Desk's web pages for details about e-mail forwarding.

Web Design

Departments can contact OIT's Media Solutions (581-6113) for help designing web sites or for departmental e-commerce information and solutions. Media Solutions is a for-fee department.
