Before dropping money on something new for your home or office (or home office), have you checked University Surplus & Salvage? If your timing is right, you could score amazing deals on secondhand items like laptops, desk chairs, whiteboards, even niche items like oscilloscopes.

The U Surplus warehouse in Fort Douglas, in operation since 1972, is a multilevel showroom for retired university property being resold in as-is condition (no refunds) on a “first-come, first-served” basis.

U departments and other government agencies get “first dibs” for 15 days, after which  inventory items can be purchased by U employees, students, and the public. Green stickers indicate the public sale date of each item. Big ticket items like vehicles are sometimes listed for auction online. When items aren’t sold, they’re scrapped for parts or sent to a certified e-waste recycler. U Surplus & Salvage supports sustainability by processing metals, e-waste, and end-of-life property for recycling and disposal.

For IT security reasons, laptop and desktop hard drives are removed and destroyed prior to resale. Surplus property is governed in accordance with Information Security Policy 4-004Media Handling Procedure P4-004L, Property Accounting Policy 3-040, and Accountability for Noncapital Equipment Policy 3-041.
